Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along 2010

**For anyone just joining us, welcome!  Come and play!  Grab a jelly roll and play catch up.  Let me clarify a little upfront:
1) There isn't an email list to remind you when the blocks are available.  You can sign up to be notified when my blog is updated.  I have posted instructions HERE
2)  All you need to do now is make your block and post it onto our Flickr group HERE.  If you need help, try THIS post.
3)  You can always check this post for the new blocks, but they are first listed as a post on my blog, then I add that link at the bottom of this post.

I am excited to introduce something that I have had in the works for a little while now:
A Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along!

From March 1 to August 2, every other Monday, instructions for a new 12" block will be posted. All of the blocks will be made from jelly roll strips and yardage.

Each block will be designed by a different person. Every two weeks there will be a guest blogger on my blog introducing herself and her block. At the end, you will have made a fun quilt 58" x 72."

Of course, all along the way there will be prizes for those who complete the blocks. Here is a picture of the quilt:

I will fill it in as we go with the blocks that we make.

Here's the nitty gritty:

Fabric Requirements --
1 jelly roll
2 yards background and sashing fabric
1 1/2 yards outer border fabric
2/3 yard binding fabric
3 3/4 yards backing fabric

Grab a jelly roll and some background fabric and let's get started!

The first drawing will be on March 1 when I post the first block. To enter this drawing, comment on this post that you want to join us and what fabric line you are thinking about making it in.

P.S. Scrappy is absolutely fine too. This quilt would make a great stash buster project.

P.P.S. I am making mine out of Attitude Girls by Mary Engelbreit for Moda.

The second drawing will be on March 15 when the first guest blogger posts the second block. Anyone who has made a block and posted it on a flickr site: (http://www.flickr.com/groups/1343277@N20/) will be entered in the drawing.

There will be another drawing each time block instructions are posted. Anyone who posts a picture of a new block since the last drawing will be entered in the next drawing. The block that you post a picture of doesn't have to be just the previous block. It can be for any of the previous blocks that you haven't posted yet.

I know I'm really late to join this, but I just went to my quilt shop today and picked up one of their own home grown jelly rolls in earthy browns. I will call it the 'no name brand' jelly roll quilt. LOL.

I hope to catch up by the end of this weekend.

I am a brand new quilter and would love to try this. I just bought a jellyroll from Ebay called Moda Natures Notebook by April Cornell. also bought the charm pack and 1 1/2 yard of Moda Nature fabric. figured I could use the 1 1/2 yards for the outer boarder. I see now I still need 2 yards of material for the background and sashing.

maribel,
Just make your blocks and post the pictures on the Flickr group.
anonymous,
The block was posted on my blog this morning. I just got it linked to this post.
Thanks!

Konda,

Since we've made it through block 3 (yeah!), could you let us know the size of the sashing strips? I'd like to put mine together as we go, since it seems the pattern calls for an organized layout.

thanks!

Moose on the Porch Quilts said...

The sashing strips will be 2 1/2"--just being consistent here.

You may want to wait though. Just thinking about getting a dominant color in your blocks distributed evenly throughout the quilt. If your blocks have less contrast, that isn't as important.

I can't wait to see them all come together!

Munch said...

I can't wait to start this. My stash needs a quick diet to make room for the delightful spring collections.

Becky said...

Thanks so much for this fun quilt along! I just completed my 3 blocks and should be on track for the next ones. I'll attempt to post my blocks on the Flickr group. Hope I remember my password:)

janieg said...

I'm struggling with block 3. After having it come out smaller that the other blocks, redoing, THEN measuring the strips....to my dismay, I found that one strip is approx 1/8 inch narrower than the standard 2.5 inches. So I'm doing it again, making the seams narrower. I could have chosen another fabric, but I really liked the one I picked. When I finish to my satisfaction, I will photo and post. In the meantime, I suggest measuring your strips. Mine was a commercial jelly roll.

Susan said...

O.K. I know I'm late signing up for this, but I've got my button, a Moda Jelly Roll, and I'm ready to get started.

Grethe said...

Great!! Everybody ahead of me,but love to join. OK? I have 2 Jelly Rolls stashed away somewhere, and I promise to work hard over this weekend, ready for block 4 on Monday April 13. And your button is already on my blog :-)

janieg said...

Wow, I had no trouble posting the first 2 blocks, but when I try this time, the block is huge (jpeg) and I can't figure out how to smaller it to get it on the page. Help please. Thanks in advance.

Sandi Linn Andersen said...

I wasn't sure I could do this. Didn't have a jelly roll and kinda promised myself I would try not to buy fabric. Then I realized there were "jelly roll" strips sitting right by machine that I cut for Dana's Quilt-a-long last summer. I finished my pink and green one in her design and had cut strips for a fall one. I don't like doing anything twice so I decided I'll use my fall strips for your Sampler. Super that I will be able to complete it at the end of August just in time for Fall! I've cut my first block and will get it posted soon as it's finished. :-) Thanks for doing this!

I'm really late to the game, but I'd love to join in. I have my jelly roll all ready to go and will catch up this week! Fun!

Cheryl said...

Nothing like joining late!!! I have so many jelly rolls and this will be so fun. I have downloaded all the patterns and plan to play catch up tonight! Great idea of yours!!!

mharpole said...

Just now joining but have completed all four blocks. My jelly roll is called Fiesta Strip-Tease Bun Island Batiks. Doesn't that sound exciting?

MaggieB said...

I just love the term jellyroll! They are such fun and I commend you for putting together such a fun activity for your community to participate in!

I hope that you will post pics as members start to finish their quilts!

I don't see the pattern for block 5, although I do see a couple of completed blocks. I use a mac. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh Holland! said...

I just found this the other day, and I'm excited! I've never ever quilted before, but I've already made blocks 1 and 2, and so far so good! I love that I can complete a block during one naptime. I also don't have a jellyroll, but I'm using my fabric scraps. Looking forward to catching up!

Miss Genny said...

I was wondering how many strips are in the Jelly roll -- I found some green 2.5 inch strips that would be great but I don't think I have enough!! :(

Moose on the Porch Quilts said...

Genny, The number of strips in a jelly roll differs depending on who made the jelly roll. A Moda jelly roll has 40 or 42. Can't remember which. With this quilt being only 12 blocks, you should probably have enough fabric. I wanted to make sure there was plenty of fabric. (And if you do run short you could make 9 blocks or add in some extra fabric.) Come and play along!

Rita said...

greetings! please count me in! i have joined late, but that's okay. i am catching up fast. i have made two blocks out of mary englebreit's 'attitude girls' and will post them on flicker soon (if i can figure out how). thank you for making this quilt along possible -- i am really enjoying it.

Sasha said...

I'm jumping in a little late too- a big catch up on the way! I'm using Essence by Sandy Gervais and I'm just waiting for some background fabric to arrive! This is a fabulous idea- thanks!

Carol said...

I've just found you're blog last week and want to play. I've been busy making blocks and have posted a few. I thought I had a jelly roll packed away and started wacking out my project. I made a few blocks then found out a jelly roll has 42 strips, mine only had 20. whoops. I'm a new quilter. The strip pack I have is Reviera and I have 2 sets and a stash so I will do my best. I do wish I would have started out with a jelly roll though. I'm fighting the urge to start over. I've learned a few things and have had fun making the blocks

Anonymous said...

Wow... This is SUCH a great idea. I keep seeing jelly rolls around but have known what to do with them... Until now! Thank you so much for this quilt-a-long. I love sampler quilts too, and this one is just the sort of size I like making too.

Anonymous said...

Just wanted to say that I'm enjoying this quilt-along so much that Ive bought another jelly roll (Aussie fabrics, with pictures on my blog) and am going to start all over again while I wait for block 12!
