Final Layer Cake Winners

We have three final winners!  What do they win?  They each will receive a layer cake, of course!

Two of these winners each made two quilts.  Making two quilts must have increased their odds.  All three of these lucky winners are extra lucky because this is the second time all of them have won.  What are the odd of that???  Just an FYI, it was random.org that picked the winners.  Sometimes completely random works that way.

So who are the winners?

First, Lismar02!

Second, VickiM35!

and third, Wilma's Craft Corner!

Her quilt was one of the bright ones.  She used the Lollipop fabric line by Sandy Gervais and had her quilt quilted and bound!  Wilma, I still couldn't grab your picture.  It says you have disabled downloading.

I know I should have your contact information, but please send it to me again so I know you are expecting your layer cake in the mail.

Thanks everyone for quilting along!  I welcome your feedback and comments on this quilt along.  I appreciate how willing everyone is to share on the flickr site.  I love how the sharing helps us all feel part of this wonderful quilting community.

Happy Quilting!

Block Twelve Winners!

Alrighty!  Here are our last block winners.  BUT not our last winners.  The LAST drawing will be on

MAY 3

The May 3 drawing will be for finished tops ONLY.  You can get into the drawing twice by posting a picture of the pieced top and another if you are able to get it quilted.  Just pictures of the blocks together don't count for this drawing.  They are fun to see.  Go ahead and post them if you want, but they don't count for the drawing.

FYI -- I have THREE layer cakes waiting for this drawing.

Another FYI -- counting the three prizes that will be given away in two weeks, 40 prizes will have been given away during this quilt along!  Thanks to all the designers who helped make this possible!

Now to the prizes today --

The first winner who gets one of my patterns is:

nirak59!

The second winner who gets one of my pattern books is:

Lismar02!

The third winner who gets a layer cake is:

lab_quilt!

Congratulations!!!  Email me (kluckau@moosequilts.com) your mailing information and your flickr name, and we will get these right out to you!

Happy Quilting!

Schedule

I just noticed that the schedule was now hiding down a couple posts, so I am reposting it where it can be found easily.

Tonight will be the LAST BLOCK drawing!

Tues, April 19 -- Block Twelve winners drawn -- this will be the last drawing for blocks, and I have a layer cake for this drawing as well as a couple other prizes. This is the time to get caught up with your blocks!

Wed, April 20 -- Block Twelve winners posted

Tues, May 3 -- Last drawing -- this drawing will be for any quilt TOPS that are finished. They can be quilted, but they don't have to be. In fact, post one picture when you get the top done. Then if you get it quilted and bound, post another picture.

FYI -- I've been saving a few layer cakes special for this drawing.

Happy Quilting!

Block Eleven with Vanessa Wilson

WOW! Block Eleven! How did that happen? Our flickr pool is beginning to look like spring. Yea! At least it is looking like spring somewhere.

Our block today is from Vanessa Wilson who is also known as the Crafty Gemini.

So, without futher ado, here's Vanessa:

Hi there! My name is Vanessa Wilson. I am the wife and mother behind Crafty Gemini [http://www.craftygemini.blogspot.com/], a blog dedicated to creativity on a budget! I post dozens of my FREE step-by-step text and video tutorials for beginning sewists and quilters. I also host giveaways, quilt alongs, and post product reviews of quilting devices, notions, etc. I'm also a new quilt designer and have two patterns being published and sold by QuiltWoman.com. You can see them both here: http://quiltwoman.com/search.aspx?find=vanessa+wilson

So, who am I and where do I come from? I am a 27-yr old, wife and stay-at-home mama by day and a college law professor by night. I was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Miami, FL. When I was in law school I was in desperate need of a creative outlet. My mother came over with a 1966 Singer sewing machine and taught me how to thread it and sew straight stitches. That was the beginning of my new obsession.

I immediately began repurposing old jeans into purses, and shirts into aprons, etc. A few weeks later I discovered a sewing/quilt shop in town and signed up for a pillow sham class, then a Christmas stocking class, etc. I remember rushing out of my law classes to make it to my quilting classes on time. My friends thought I was crazy!
My goal is to eventually have my own quilting show! In the meantime, I post video tutorials to spread my love of sewing and quilting with the world. My videos cover a variety of subjects from how to make toddler pants out of a t-shirt to loading a quilt on you longarm frame. My YouTube channel  [http://www.youtube.com/TheCraftyGemini] has had great success with almost 500,000 views and over 2,700 subscribers worldwide.
I hope you enjoyed reading a little bit about me! To follow more of my quilty ventures check me out at the Crafty Gemini blog [http://www.craftygemini.blogspot.com/].

Click HERE for instructions to Vanessa's block.

Thanks Vanessa!

Here is a picture of Vanessa's "E-ccentric Quilt Block."

Here is a picture of my block.  As usual, my colors are a little wild.  I'm still getting use to them.

Notes about the pattern:

1)  The cutting instructions use 1/8" measurements.  I know this worries some of you.  Take a deep breath.  You can do it.  The 1/8" marks are the little ones on your ruler between the marks you usually use.  3 1/8" is one little mark more than 3."  1 7/8" is one mark less than 2," or 7 little marks more than 1."

2)  On the pattern, Vanessa notes to use a scant 1/4" seam.  Between that and the 1/8," I was a little worried, so I sewed a very scant 1/4," and ended up with my piece too big.

Then I checked the math.

Turns out, in the top and bottom row, using a regular 1/4" seam creates a block that is 1/8" too small.  1/8" over four seams is NOT a lot.  You can make 4 seams 1/8" bigger by pressing.  The other critical place is the 5 pieces that make up the E.  If sewn with a true 1/4," the piece ends up 1/4" short.  It also really isn't that much.  This is where I tested my small seam and ended up too large.

Conclusion:  When Vanessa says to use a scant 1/4" seam, she means the regular scant 1/4" seam that is barely, barely, one thread over from 1/4."  Mostly, just make sure you aren't sewing a seam any larger than 1/4."  That will give you fits.   My block went together just fine (on the second try).

3)  FYI -- Fabric A and Fabric C take 1 layer cake + 1 -- 3 1/8" square.  I used two scraps for Fabric A and Fabric B and used one layer cake square for Fabric C.  I didn't have a similar scrap to Fabric C, so I pieced that last 3 1/8" square.

Conclusion:  If you piece that last square, you will have enough of both Fabric A and C using 1 -- 10" square.

I also ended up piecing one of the Fabric A squares, but that's because my first cut was wrong.  Oh well!

So what happens next?

Well, any pictures posted in the flickr group by tonight will be entered into the first drawing. About 10 ish tonight (Mountain Time) or tomorrow morning, I will post my Block TEN. All blocks BEFORE mine are those entered into the first drawing. It doesn't matter which block - just the one's posted before mine. If you post your block AFTER mine, then it will be entered into the next drawing. I will post the winners tomorrow.

What's up for grabs this time?

Vanessa has donated TWO of her patterns!

And I think I should donate TWO of my patterns!

Sweet Baby Kate!

and Baby Sadie's Bears!

Block Ten with Kari Ramsay

Today is the day for Block 10!  Time just keeps marching on doesn't it?  Our block today is from Kari Ramsay of Fresh Cut Quilts.

Here's a link to her blog:

Kari has designed patterns for a while and has recently teamed up with Henry Glass for her first fabric line, Tidbits.  I am sure she has been busy working on a second or even a third line, but right now she has one.  Here is a link to the free pattern on Henry Glass' website:

With all of that, this is how Kari describes herself:
I am the owner and designer of Fresh Cut Quilts Pattern Co. I am a Mom of 2 children who I adore, and have been happily married to my husband for 16 years. Before I became a quilt pattern designer, I worked in retail management and before that I was a floral designer for about 10 years. My specialty was wedding flowers. Design and sewing have been a part of my life ever since I can remember and now I get to follow my passion for design in my quilting!

Thanks Kari!

Here's a picture of Kari's block.

Here's a picture of my block.  All of it came from scraps except the red.  I didn't have two pieces of the same or similar color large enough for those two pieces.  I think it will work with my other blocks.  This fabric is turning out to be pretty wild.

Also, just a note -- I print my patterns out in black and white.  I couldn't tell which square was yellow.  It was easy to figure out, but if you mark it on the pattern right when you print it and are still looking at the color copy on the computer screen, you won't have to wonder about that when you get to your sewing machine.

So what happens next?

Well, any pictures posted in the flickr group by tonight will be entered into the first drawing. About 10 ish tonight (Mountain Time) I will post my Block NINE. All blocks BEFORE mine are those entered into the first drawing. It doesn't matter which block - just the one's posted before mine. If you post your block AFTER mine, then it will be entered into the next drawing. I will post the winners tomorrow.

What's up for grabs this time?

Kari has donated one of her books!

and I have two copies of this magazine that my quilt was in!

We shall see who these two winners are tomorrow along with some fun flower blocks.

Happy Quilting!

Block Eight Winners!

Let's have some winners already!!!  I like posting winners in the morning instead of late at night sometimes, but this morning got away from me being able to get to the computer.  We do have two winners among the great blocks showing up on flickr.

First though, I have had some ask how I pick the winners.  I have mentioned it before, but in case you missed that particular post, I let http://www.random.org/ pick the winners.  I count how many photos are in the flickr pool between my photos and magically random numbers appear!

So who did random.org pick this time?

First, a quilt lady!

and second, IslandLifeQuilts!

You each get a mystery prize from either Jovita or I.  Email me your address along with your flickrname either through flickr or at kluckau@moosequilts.com.

Thanks for playing!

Block Nine with Jovita Goldschmidt

Here we are at Block Nine.  Awesome!  This block has been a little interesting to work on.  Interesting because Jovita lives on the other side of the pond.  The time zone difference making communicating by email a slower process than usual.  I think it is amazing that in our Layer Cake Quilt Along group we have people from all over the world!

Jovita's blog is: http://jovitaspatchwork.blogspot.com/.

Here's Jovita!

I’m a native of the Pacific Northwest (USA) and am happily married to the love of my life. Axel is originally from Germany so you’ll often finding us jumping back and forth across the pond to visit friends and family.

My love for fabrics and creating things began at a very young age as I watched my mom sew work shirts, wedding clothes, play clothes, swimwear and even underwear for myself and seven siblings while my dad worked, gardened and bartered to feed his brood at home.

As a result of their amazing inspiration, I am surrounded by craftsmen: everything from woodworking to ceramic art, tole painting and cross-stitching to knitting and more – oh, did I mention quilting? My mom and four sisters are all quilters.

I also love to garden and to cook and bake, but hate the clean-up and can really get lost in a good book - especially if it’s a historical novel but only if it’s based on true fact.

When I’m not sewing, I’m dreaming up a new design for this or that, updating the shop’s website, sitting with a cup of coffee on the porch staring at the garden with a blank notebook next to me ready to jot down, scribble or draw the next crazy idea whether it be a quilt, something to paint on the wall, a sketch of a newflower bed, something “to do” or a note to a friend . . .

. . . you get the picture right? . . . my brain never stops!

Jovita has 4 variations for her block.  These blocks aren't actually sewn together yet.  She has sewn the 9 pieces together and rotated them to come up with 4 variations.

Here's what I came up with!  It was fun rotating and playing.  I wanted to have my yellow be star points, but then I liked the white design better this way.

So what happens next?

Well, any pictures posted in the flickr group by tonight will be entered into the first drawing. About 10 ish tonight (Mountain Time) I will post my Block EIGHT. All blocks BEFORE mine are those entered into the first drawing. It doesn't matter which block - just the one's posted before mine. If you post your block AFTER mine, then it will be entered into the next drawing. I will post the winners tomorrow.

What's up for grabs this time?

I actually don't know. . . .  We will have two mystery prizes up for grabs this time.

Happy Quilting!

Block Six with Toby Lischko

This is one of those weeks where I say, "Thank heavens for a quilt along!"  I say this because the only time I made it to my sewing machine in the last two weeks is to make this quilt block.  So sad!  I got fabric in the mail yesterday for some of the quilts for my next book so I hope to spend some quality time with my sewing machine today.

Oh, but you want to see block six!  Okay, here goes. . .

Block six is brought to us by Toby Lischko.  Toby made a block for our Jelly Roll Sampler and then came back for another round!  If you have picked up a quilt magazine in the last few years, you have seen Toby's work, but I'll let Toby introduce herself.

Here's Toby!

Hi, I’m Toby Lischko. Konda was nice enough to let me participate in both the Jelly Roll Sampler and the Layer Cakes Sampler! For those of you that don’t know me, I have been quilting since 1985 and designing quilts and teaching since 1995. You may have seen some of my designs in the major quilt magazines. I didn’t pay much attention to who made the quilts in the magazines until I started getting published and now I always make a point to see who the quilt artist is (and anyone who makes a quilt is an artist!)

I come from a long line of sewers; my mother and her father both did tailor work (lots of hand work) but I am the first quilter in my family. Always a crafter; I have been doing some type of craft since I was 7 or 8 years old. You name the craft and I have tried it. Quilting is the one craft that I have stuck to the longest and find the most rewarding. It never gets boring, and I love to design quilts!

My block is a part of a design that is in a free pattern on Timeless Treasures website http://www.ttfabrics.com/ called Pointing the way. You can download the pattern from there. The block is very easy to construct and is purposely made a little larger so you can cut it to size. You also have the option of using my Cutting Corners template set to eliminate the need to draw a diagonal sewing line.

I started my website http://www.gatewayquiltsnstuff.com/ 2 years ago and my blog http://gatewayquiltsnstuff.blogspot.com/ 1 year ago. I do not post often but try to incorporate some lesson in each blog. You can find basic lessons on accurate piecing and my favorite and specialty, curved piecing. If you like samplers I have a new published one in Fons & Porters Love of Quilting called Civil War Sampler. Great for those who love Civil War reproduction fabrics. The collection is by Pat Nickols for RJR called Civil War Ladies. Both Fons & Porter and I carry the kits for it.

Enjoy making the blocks in this sampler. Thank you Konda for including me again. I loved seeing the blocks people created with my Jelly Roll design. There are a lot of very creative quilters out there! As I say in my blog “Always do what you love and love what you do”.

Toby

 Thanks Toby!

CLICK HERE for the instructions to Block Six.

Here's a picture of my block.  I know some of you are getting nervous about having enough material to finish the quilt.  I think will be alright.  I used this block to illustrate what I mean.  In this block, I picked fabrics that aren't my favorite -- the small pink flowers and the stripe.  There was just enough left from cutting the inside pieces to cut the corner squares.  Then the blue pieces are scraps from other blocks.  The green was from a new square, but it left a large piece left for something else.  Since we are halfway now, maybe you have some scraps to start working in.

Now, if you don't want to use some of your less favorite pieces or want to have more control over colors, there may not be enough for that.  I heard some of you are grabbing a few extra fat quarters.  That is definitely an option.  Up to you.  I like having choices.

Anyway, here's my block:

In Toby's post, she said she designed this block for Timeless Treasures.  It was a 9" block.  She added the border just for us.  Here is the picture of the quilt:

Isn't that fun to see what a whole quilt looks like using the block!  Also, Toby mentioned her Cutting Corners Template.  Here is a picture of what that looks like.

So what happens next?

Well, any pictures posted in the flickr group by tonight will be entered into the first drawing. About 10 ish tonight (Mountain Time) I will post my Block FIVE. All blocks BEFORE mine are those entered into the first drawing. It doesn't matter which block - just the one's posted before mine. If you post your block AFTER mine, then it will be entered into the next drawing. I will post the winners tomorrow.

What's up for grabs this time?

Toby has donated one of her Cutting Corners Templates as our prize tomorrow!  Thanks Toby!

What do I have?  Let's see. . . I think I have a layer cake hiding in my sewing room that needs a new home.  Are you back to sewing so you can give my layer cake a good home?

Happy Quilting!

Block Four Winners

Last night we did get back super late.  First we went to see my grandmother.  It felt like we were visiting santa.  I was there with some of my siblings so there was 15 little kids there.  They all took a turn sitting on grandma's lap while my sister-in-law snapped photos.  Grandma made sure to give all the kids love.  The thing I can't figure is that not only does she know all of their names, she knows most of their middle names and the month of their birthdays as well.  Amazing.  She has at least 30 grandchildren and most of them are married with children now so you know she has a gazillion great grand children.

After visiting grandma, we ate at a kid-friendly quick place and went to see the lights.  We actually found parking three blocks away.  I think that's a record for us!  If you are ever in Salt Lake City from the day after Thanksgiving until New Year's Eve, you should try to visit Temple Square to see the lights.  Two city blocks right in the middle of town has almost every tree loaded with lights.  It is absolutely gorgeous!  We make it up there about every othre year.  Here is just a snippet.  I didn't get great pictures -- just had my little camera.

Okay, okay, you want to know who won.  Well, here we go --

The winner of my calendar/planner is:

isewcrooked!

and the winner of Cara's City Weekend jelly roll is:

cricketsstudio!

Thanks everyone!

Those who won, be sure to send me an email (kluckau@moosequilts.com) with your mailing address so we can get those out to you.  Include your flickr name so I know who you are!

The next deadline, for block five, is January 11th.

Happy quilting!

Block Five with Cara Wilson

Hello!  Seems like it's been forever.  I have a few pictures of some handmade Christmas gifts that didn't get posted.  I'll have to get to that later this week.  I ended up taking an impromptu 1600 mile drive (that's round trip) over the weekend before Christmas to see my brother and his family before they went to Germany for three years.  They are there now.  It was a great trip.  Kids always love seeing their cousins.  Hope everyone's holidays were as nice as ours was.

I see a few of you have been quilting. Have you recovered from all the celebrations?

Today's block is brought to you by Cara Wilson.  Here's the link to Cara's website: http://www.caraquilts.com/.  Cara came to us through the Jelly Roll Quilt Along!

Now, here's Cara:

Hi everyone! My name is Cara from CaraQuilts designs. I am so excited to be able to offer you a block for the Layer Cake Quilt Along. I really enjoyed the Jelly Roll version so this is very fun for me!

I started quilting in my college dorm room at 18 and have been collecting fabric and quilting ever since! Recently I’ve started creating patterns for Moda Bake Shop, Riley Blake, and will be doing to monthly clubs for Stitchin’ Heaven.

Quilting to me means so much, it is something that gives me calm, it’s an outlet for creativity and individuality, especially when I’m feeling more like someone’s wife or mother than Cara. I love picking fabrics, figuring out what pattern works best, or designing a new one just for them, and then diving in and watching something grow out of it. Quilting also gives me a way to send my love to those I can’t be near physically. I like to say wrapping yourself in a quilt is like being hugged by the person who made it. Another big thing that quilting is to me is an opportunity to stretch myself and maybe reach further then I normally would. Being scared in quilting doesn’t work so well, so I find myself letting go of anxiety and just going for things.

Quilting is soothing, rejuvenating and exciting all at the same time! The online quilting community is incredibly wonderful and I have to say there is nothing more exciting for me to watch and help someone new get bitten by the quilting bug and brought over to the fabric side!!

I love quilts and fabrics of all sorts and a sampler is such a fun way to get a bit of everything in a quilt! I hope you enjoy my block and have fun making it!

Thanks Cara!

Here's a picture of Cara's block.

Yes, this is a digital picture.  With Christmas and all, I didn't follow up with Cara until yesterday.  Then I had issues with the block as I made it.  So Cara tweeked the block for us.  Thanks Cara!  I will get my block done today and post it here.  In the meantime, there are usually a few that pop up quickly on flickr for those of you who want to take a look at some variations before you make your.

So what happens next?

Well, any pictures posted in the flickr group by tonight will be entered into the first drawing. About 10 ish tonight (Mountain Time) I will post my Block FOUR. All blocks BEFORE mine are those entered into the first drawing. It doesn't matter which block - just the one's posted before mine. If you post your block AFTER mine, then it will be entered into the next drawing. I will post the winners tomorrow.

What's up for grabs this time?

Cara has generously donated a City Weekend jelly roll!

And I, have my favorite calendar/planner to give.

And for those of you who have found there way back to the sewing machine.  I have a feeling that not everyone will have found their way back so there will probably be fewer blocks in this drawing.  Also, I am taking the kids to see their great-grandma who lives a good hour a way.  We will probably be home late.  I may not be able to get to the computer before morning.
Happy Quilting!
