Layer Cake Quilt Along 2010

You know a quilt along is almost here because the blog button has appeared!

Layer Cake Quilt Along
2 Nov 2010 to 3 May 2011

Starting November 2nd, every other TUESDAY, instructions for a new 12" block will be posted.  All of the blocks will be made from a layer cake (10" squares) and yardage.  Links to all of the blocks will be on this post, but instructions are first posted on my blog (click on the header at the top of this page).

Each block will be designed by a different person.  Every two weeks there will be a guest blogger on my blog introducing himself or herself and his/her block.  At the end you will have made a fun quilt
64" x 80."

Here's the information you need to get started:

Fabric Requirements:

1 Layer Cake (or 12 fat quarters)
1 1/2 yards accent fabric
1 2/3 yards outer border
4 yards backing
2/3 yards binding

Size of Quilt: 64" x 80"

FAQ:
There have already been some questions, so here's some answers. . . .

1)  Will linear quarter yards work?
They should work just fine.  I have told the designers that they have 10" squares of fabric to use in their designs.  Some of them will have pieces that are 10" long at most.  I was at first thinking this was a problem because you only have 9" of width with a linear yard, but you have 10" in the other direction.

2)  What's up with the accent fabric?
The designers are not given liberty to use the accent fabric like they were with the last quilt along.  They were told they could use a small portion in small amounts if needed and it couldn't be along the outer edge of the block.

The accent fabric will be used to frame each block as well as a stop border for the entire quilt.  The fabrics I am using are on the blog button.  I am using white as my accent fabric.  Everyone should NOT choose white.  Choose the fabric like you would choose a stop border.  (The stop border is that first narrow border that stops your eye as you are looking at the quilt.)

3)  When is the first drawing?
The first drawing will be on Tuesday, Nov 2.  To be entered in this drawing comment on this post.  If you know what fabric you are using, add that in.  If you don't know yet, that's okay.  Drawings will always be held Tuesday night after the posting of the block.  Winners will be posted the following day on my blog.

4)  How do I get entered into the block drawings?
You get entered into block drawings by posting your block on a flickr site.  Here is the link to the flickr group:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/1527403@N20/
I'm sure I have forgotten something.  If you have questions, let me know.  FYI, if you post anonymously, then I can't email you a response.

Grab a button, and join the fun!!!

This is my first quilt-a-long, so I'm really excited!

I'm using Moda Eden, with Bella Snow as my accent.

Not sure of my outer border, but I've bought two Eden prints to choose from. Once I've got a few blocks made I'll have a better idea which one I'll choose.

Off to learn how to add the button!

Terry said...

I'm in! I just posted the button on the sidebar of my blog! I don't know what fabrics I'm using yet, but I'm looking forward to it! :0)

Count me in -- I'm so excited -- bought my fabric a couple of weeks ago. I'm using Martinique by 3 sisters. I had so much fun with the jelly roll quilt-along. I entered it in our county fair and received a ribbon -- awsome!

Oh goodie!!! Cannot wait to get started! I'll be using Fandango fat quarters. Have yet to select and accent fabric, but will do that soon.

Thanks Konda!

I'm excited. I'm going shop hopping next Wednesday to find the perfect fabric!

Count me in! I have no clue what I'm going to use yet. I guess I'll have to hit some quilt shops! :)

I have a serious Layer cake stash so I am certainly going to try and join in. A block every now and then shouldn't be too difficult I hope.

Staci said...

I am looking forward to this so much! I think I'm going to dig into my Lakehouse Tea Time stash for this quilt, so I won't actually be using a layer cake, just wonderful fabrics.
I've got the button added to my blog!

Lee Ann L. said...

I am really really wanting to do this. I've already got the fabric, which is Pure by Sweetwater for Moda.

I'm praying that I do alright as I never really done anything like this before and I have to confess, I'm scared. I'm afraid I'm going to mess up so badly! LOL. :-)

I'll be posting the button on my blog; but, I'm not sure if I'll be successful. But, at the very least, others will find out about it. :-)

Gari in AL said...

Oh, my. I have never bought a layer cake so I will have to do some fabric shopping. Do I only need one layer cake? plus some yardage. But I so enjoyed the JRQAL that I guess I must join in this one, too. Thanks

Rhanda said...

Sounds like fun! Will go buy the layer cake tomorrow!

Oh I can't wait to quilt along with ya'all again! I'm so excited! I think I'm going to use some Art Gallery that I have laying around in my stash.

Already put the button on my blog, that's how ready for this I am ;)

Deb said...

I loved the Jelly Roll Quilt Along so much that as soon as I saw your earlier post about the Layer Cake Quilt Along I ordered a Fandango layer cake on sale and all the yardage I would need. I'm hoping whatever I picked for the accent piece will truly be an accent. I'm sure I was just thinking a border fabric when I selected it. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to it, and I'll post the button, too. Thanks!

Ingrid said...

Count me in too. Just finished the back of the JellyRoll QuiltAlong. That one is ready to sandwich and quilt. The button for the LayerCake is on my blog now. Don't know what FQ's to use, but I've got some to choose from.

Sherry said...

Am borrowing a great idea from another poster...I'm using my red/white/blues from stash for the layer cake sew-along. That way I can make a top for an american hero quilt and have fun with you all at the same time.

Can't wait to get started.

Kim and Jim said...

I'm excited for another quilt-along! Even my husband liked my quilt from the Jelly-Roll one, and he can be hard to please :)

Not sure what fabric to use yet... I have some leftover squares from an old Moda Layer Cake, I'm not even sure what line. Or, I have a bunch of fat quarters begging me to make them into something cute. We'll have to see!

Wandering Minstrel said...

I'm in, and I'm very excited, as this is my very first quilt-along! It's also the first quilt I'm making without an already-decided recipient--could I be getting into dangerous territory? *grins*

I'm going to be using a Dream On by Urban Chicks layer cake, and I will find accent fabric and order the border fabric once I have the layer cake in my hot little hands.

Nathalie said...

Finished the top and back of the jelly roll quilt along and am excited to start this one with 12 fat quarters I got many moons ago.

So fun! I'm using It's a Hoot, which has been sitting on the shelf, just waiting for an opportunity to show off.

This will be lots of fun - I really had fun on the last quiltalong. I'm torn with buying a new layer cake, using the Scout fabric I already have for my Eagle Scout, or using 40 pcs of stash.

My sister said I "HAVE" to do this so I am in...LOL. Of course she didn't have to push too hard. I bought a layer cake by Moda today but can't decide if I love it or not. I'm thinking of going with Origins by Basic Grey for my younger daughter who loves green. I would accent with the grunge black from the line. I guess I will have to decide soon or just make two quilts. Right now I am working with Salt Harvest by Moda.

I love the jelly roll quilt along. It was my first time using a jelly roll and I discovered how nice it is to have minimal cutting. I wonder if I'll fall in love with layer cakes too. I probably will start late on this quilt along, so I haven't chosen my fabrics yet.

I finally decided I'm in! Can you tell me if we'll be using the entire layer cake? I have a complete layer cake which isn't my style but could be fun anyway or one that is definitely my style but missing a couple of slices.

I REALLY have to wait another week for the next block? I thought for sure it was coming out tomorrow! Can you tell I'm impatient? LOL

Just got my layer cake. I'm using Clermont Farms by Minck & Simpson.

Cathy said...

I'm late joining. This is my first quilt along. I don't have a blog yet or a flicker account, but I hope to start both over the next few days. I will be using fat quarters from Robert Hoffman Wildflowers. I know what I'm going to use for the border but I'm not sure about the accent fabric yet.

BettyK said...

I am also joining late. I haven't even decided yet on my fabrics. I have a group of fat quarters, called Quilter's Palette, Fashion II Collection. I am leaning toward using them - there are 20 FQ's so many options. I do not have a blog.
