Block Twelve Winners -- and a note about the last drawings

Wow!  The last block is officially finished!  Love seeing all the finished quilts coming in -- especially all the different settings!  So fun!

We have four winners today.  The first three will get one of my patterns.  I guess they will be a surprise since I need to get on the ball and get them on my website so they can be purchased!  The fourth one will get the jelly roll.

The winner of the first pattern is:
mountain1girl!

The winner of the second pattern is:
sjokoquilt!

The winner of the third pattern is:
faith_hope_love_grace!

and the winner of the jelly roll is:
a Quilt Lady!

I will be contacting the winners via Flickr Mail.  Please send me your mailing address either via Flickr Mail or to my email address kluckau@moosequilts.com so I can mail you your prizes!

and one order of business:

NOTE:
I have noticed some of you wondering about quilting your quilt.  I quilted my swanky quilt with an overall floral design.  It turned out nice.  As a machine quilter I have lots of ideas of how to quilt these quilts.  It isn't very fun to read out them though, and it largely depends on the fabrics used.  SO --

if you happen to get your quilt quilted in the next two weeks, please post a picture of your quilt that shows the quilting to the Flickr group to give everyone some ideas.  That also gives you another chance to win.  There is another jelly roll up for grabs in our last drawing!

AND don't forget to add your name in the comments of this post: http://moosequilts.blogspot.com/2010/08/another-drawing-for-jelly-roll.html.  That drawing will be in two weeks also.

Thanks!!!

Block Ten with Kari Ramsay

First of all, can I just say. . .
Who in the world made this block come due on the 4th of July weekend?!?
It couldn't have been me!  Oh wait!  It could.  Sometimes I do not like having no one to blame but myself.  Y'all are just lucky that's all there is to it.

I have had one family reunion 3 hours away, then a quilt show to wrap up, family in town, then another family reunion 2.5 hours away, and a 4th of July race in the morning.  We have been taking full advantage of "summer" here and have been loving almost every minute of it.  I have no idea how I remembered to get this posted for you.

I am pretty sure Kari's life is about as busy right now.  She is out of town this week.  Fortunately this bunch of designers for this quilt along have all been fabulous about getting their blocks to me.  Kari was no exception.  Who is Kari?  Well, let me tell you!

Kari Ramsay is another Utah pattern designer.  (I wanted to say, "Let me tell you!" again.  It is too late for me to be writing this.  Oh well!)  Kari's patterns have really taken off recently.  I have been seeing her everywhere!  Kari's company is Fresh Cut Quilts.  She has a fun blog, of course!  You can check it out at http://www.freshcutquilts.blogspot.com/.  She has been featured on Moda Bake Shop, has recently come out with a pattern book, and I know she has more big things in the works.

Okay, so I either didn't get Kari's shout out to you or I misplaced it.  Either way, I'M SORRY!!!  We will have to get her to give you a shout out when she gets home.  Here is Kari's bio from her blog:

I am the owner and designer of Fresh Cut Quilts Pattern Co. I am a Mom of 2 children who I adore, and have been happily married to my husband for 16 years. Before I became a quilt pattern designer, I worked in retail management and before that I was a floral designer for about 10 years. My specialty was wedding flowers. Design and sewing have been a part of my life ever since I can remember and now I get to follow my passion for design in my quilting!

Click HERE for instructions to Kari's block.
Thanks Kari!

Here is the picture of the block that Kari made:

I can see the gears in your brain starting to turn. . . .  Another fun block, full of possibilities!

Oh, and Kari has kindly donated a Kate Spain 12 days of Christmas Jelly Roll to go along with my jelly roll!  This is probably a drawing you want to be in -- as busy as I have been, I imagine that I'm not the only one.  Maybe not as many blocks will be made this time.  Maybe there will be a better chance to win.  Maybe not, but maybe so!

Block Eight Winners -- and being grateful!

More awesome blocks and more great winners!  I am so glad that so many of us have been able to make time to quilt.  As I snuck down into my sewing room, I was grateful to "have" to make these blocks.  For 20 minutes or so I felt at peace.  I wasn't worried about the laundry or the dishes or kids' quarrels.  I took that time for everything is was worth.  I was sewing as fast as I could because I knew that the busy-ness of the day would soon catch me.  I just sewed and as I sewed, I relaxed.  When I was done, I put my blocks away, took a deep breath, and re-entered my crazy life -- grateful for a few minutes with my sewing machine.

I hope these blocks have given you some time to breathe in your life too.

Without further ado (Is that how you spell that?), here are the winners!!!

(Toby put a demonstration of it up on her blog for us) --

is kvparham!

And the winner of the jelly roll from me is:

harrispen!

And now for the fine print:
These are the Flickr usernames. I have emailed both winners via Flickr mail. I have also posted their blocks to help identify the winners. Email me (kluckau@moosequilts.com) to claim your prize.

Remember, if you didn't get your block done, no worries. There will be another drawing in two weeks! Any blocks posted between now and then will be entered into the next drawing.

Thanks for playing everyone! Keep on quilting!

I was up until 2:30 this morning and forgot to pick us some winners.  Good thing we are all having a good time, and I know you will forgive me for posting them now.  I'm only a few hours late.

Thank you for asking -- the project that kept me up so late is almost done (the new book that I am taking to the printer today!).  Just a couple little things left that I will finish as soon as we post these winners --

janamcb wins the charm pack from Nanette!

and ozarkwell wins a jelly roll from me!

Congratulations!

Block Five Winners!

Here I am in Council Bluffs, Iowa on my way home from Paducah, Kentucky marvelling at the amazing country I have been driving through.  I brought things to do while in the car, but I just can't get enough of staring out the window.

This country is gorgeous!  I love it!  Thanks to all of you bloggers who came and said hello to me!  Quilters are a great group of people.  The quilt show was great.  I do have some pictures to post, but I left my camera cord home -- dumb move I know -- so I can't get them on the computer until I get home.

But now my husband says it is time to go to bed.  (I better get off the computer so he can go to bed as he does all of the driving.)

But, real fast, here are the winners --

jenjohnson wins something fun from Emily Herrick

and Denise in PA wins a jelly roll from me.

Congratulations!

Block Five with Emily Herrick

Emily and I met when a baby quilt she had made won the viewer's choice award at our local Peteetneet Quilt Show.   She ended up part of our quilt show committee and now we both write quilt patterns.  Emily's company is called Crazy Old Ladies.  Emily is the type of person who you like the minute you meet her.  She is very friendly and a lot of fun.  She has a great eye for quilts, and I'm so glad she said she would design a block for you.

Now from Emily:
-Hey all, it's me here! That's right, the one and only Crazy Old Lady! Ok, so I've been catching a lot of flack for not being old but funny how no one ever mentions the 'Crazy' part. OH well. Some of you may know me by my street name- Emily Herrick. I have been quilting for almost a decade. About 2 years ago I started to go 'crazy' when I decided to start designing and selling my quilt patterns. It has been a BLAST! The best part is that I can quilt [almost] whenever I want and tell my husband "I'm working" and he's okay with it (most of the time.) Naturally I am attracted to all things fabric and quilting so when Konda asked me to be a part of her Jelly-Roll-Quilt-Along I was so excited. I hope ya'll don't mind that I wanted to share the block I designed that was featured in Quiltmaker magazine several months ago. I LOVE this block because it's different. I thought it would add nice interest to your quilts. But what I really love about this block is a whole quilt done out of it! For those of you up for that challenge you can get a good idea of what it will look like here: http://crazyoldladiesquilts.blogspot.com/2009/11/100.html

I've had such a fun time checking out all the blocks as you quilt along and I can't wait to see what you do with mine!

Happy Quilting!

Click HERE for instructions to Emily's block.

Thanks Emily!!!

Here are my blocks:  First with Attitude Girls

Second, with Swanky

My favorite thing about this block is seeing Emily's whole quilt that she made using this pattern.  (See link above.)  I love how it's almost an optical illusion -- which chain are you seeing?

REMINDER:  You have two weeks to make these blocks.  There will be a drawing tomorrow for block four.  Of course, any block that is posted before mine on flickr gets entered in the drawing.  I have another jelly roll up for grabs and Emily has graciously donated one of her patterns.  YEAH!

Note:  Please forgive me if the timing of the drawing is a little off.  I will be on the road Monday night.  I am hoping we will find a good internet connection on the road and that you don't notice a difference, but sorry in advance if it doesn't quite work out that way.

Thanks!

Block Four with Kathy Skomp

I met Kathy Skomp and her husband about a year and a half ago in Houston at Quilt Market.  Our booths were across the aisle diagonal from each other.  Being from Tennessee, they were very friendly, and I couldn't help but like them.  Kathy and her husband the owners of Lavender Lime Quilt Shop.
Kathy also writes quilt pattern books.  I think this book "Sassy and Sophisticated" was the new book when we met.

With our booths so close together, by the time market was over I could give their pitch just as well as I could give my pitch, and sometimes I did on accident.  I think I will forever remember that Kathy's quilts sell fabric, and they are easy to kit.

Our lives came together again when I saw that Kathy was designing patterns for Northcott just like I was, and we both have the same number of books published.  BUT before I tell you everything, here's what Kathy has to tell you:

Hey Ya'll from Chattanooga, Tennessee

I started sewing at a very young age as I grew up in my grandmother's and mother's upholstery and drapery shop. I was picking up scraps off the the workroom floor and making purses which I sold in elementary school. Even some of the teachers bought my purses. I decided I did not want to make a living sewing, (don't ever say never) so I graduated college and spent the next 15 years as a math/technology teacher. I sewed as a hobby, making items for my home and sometimes sewing my own clothes. I took my first quilting class about 10 years ago. The first time I worked with Batik fabric, I was hooked.

My husband and I opened Lavender Lime Quilting in Chattanooga in the summer of 2005. In 2009, we were named by Better Homes and Gardens as a "Top Ten Shop" and were featured in their 2009 Fall Edition of Quilt Sampler Magazine.

I began designing patterns in 2007. We have 6 books published under "Designs by Lavender Lime" and #7 is almost ready. You can see all the books and many quilts made from the books on our web site at http://www.lavenderlimeinspires.com/. The books are sold nationwide and are carried by many quilt shops. The designs are easy and quick but make beautiful quilts. I also design patterns for Northcott Fabrics. You can check out their website and see my designs: http://www.northcott.com/.

My blog is http://lavenderlimeinspires.blogspot.com/ where I try to post things going on at the shop. We would love to have you as a follower. My favorite things about this business are the creative freedom that quilting allows and the wonderful people that I come in contact with. What a blessing to spend time creating!

~Kathy

Thanks Kathy!

Kathy has designed block 4.  She calls it "Stepping Down."

Click HERE for instructions to Kathy's block.

Here are my blocks:  First, with Attitude Girls

Second, with Swanky.  For this one I just used two jelly roll strips that I alternated and used my background fabric as the small squares.

REMINDER:  You have two weeks to make these blocks.  There will be a drawing tomorrow for block three.  Of course, any block that is posted before mine on flickr gets entered in the drawing.  I have a jelly roll up for grabs and Kathy has graciously donated one of her quilt books.  YEAH!

Note:  Something is being wacky this morning with my pdf files.  I hope the file works for you.  I am going to post this and then try to trouble shoot.  I will be working at the computer this morning so hopefully we can get the kinks ironed out.

Block Three with Debbie Maddy

I am so pleased to introduce you to Debbie Maddy!  Debbie is someone who I didn't know I knew.  Since she said she would be one of designers, I have seen her everywhere.  Now that you have met Debbie, maybe you will too.  Thanks Debbie!

My name is Debbie Maddy and I live in a small town in north Texas with my husband of 40 years. We have two grown sons. Probably like many of you, I learned to sew as a young girl. I did all kinds of needlework and was a garment sewer until I learned to quilt. My first quilt was a king size sampler cut with paper templates and hand stitched. When I discovered the rotary cutter I felt like I had been riding a horse and had bought a new car. I soon learned how much I enjoyed sharing my knowledge. I now travel to lecture and teach for guilds and shops around the country. I have tried to put a lot of energy into teaching new quilters and designing quilts using what I call my No Diamonds / No “Y” Seams technique. The quilts are based on old designs that used diamonds, but are made with half square triangles.

My pattern company is called Calico Carriage Quilt Designs®.

My first pattern was called Carpenter’s Star and is great for beginning and experienced quilters. I now have 34 patterns and 6 books.

I was invited to tape a segment of Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson and that was a wonderful adventure!

I started my blog (http://www.calicocarriage.com/blog/ ) because I really enjoy sharing my travels and experiences with others. I like to share the pictures of classes to inspire others to start something new and to share the fun of taking a class. I share the places I travel to because I enjoy reading about where other people have been.

I share recipes and restaurant information because food is a very important part of our lives.

My youngest son and his wife are both professional chefs.

As you can see my life is never boring.

I hope to meet many of you on my blog or in my travels.

Please check out my itinerary to see if I will be in your area.

Happy Quilting!

Debbie Maddy

And now here's block three!  CLICK HERE for the instructions to Debbie's block she named In & Out Block!

This picture is the block Debbie made.  I will get mine up here today.  I got in late last night after an impromptu trip out of town all week so I didn't get my block made.  As you some of you can tell, this block will practically sew itself!  Can't wait to see what it looks like in all it variations.

Reminder on the drawings --
Late tonight I will post my pictures on Flickr.  Whoever has their blocks posted before mine will be entered in the drawing tomorrow.  There will actually be three prizes tomorrow, three chances to win.  Yeah!!!!

Let the sewing begin!

Block 2 or Can't Make Just One!

This block was so fun that I couldn't make just one -- I made two!  BUT you will see them in a minute.

First, meet our block designer for today, April Mazzoleni!  April is a friend of mine.  She is also a quiltmaker with a great eye for design.  Check out her blog, you will see what I mean.  Here's April. . . .

Once all of my kids were school aged, I had found myself at home with a lot of time on my hands. Too long to just sit around and wait for everyone to get home and not long enough to get a real job...plus I had already done the real job thing for 15 years and just couldn't go back. I dusted off the sewing machine that my parents gave me when I turned 18 and started sewing. With my mom two states away and no one around to help, I jumped right in. Sewing has changed my life in sew many ways. It's given me a creative outlet, provided me with an income and has helped me to make many friends along the way.

For me blogging, sewing and friends have gone hand in hand. I started blogging about 2 years ago now and love it. It's not about the number of visitors or the number of comments (although comments are always fun to read) it's more of being part of a community, keeping connected and sharing that part of myself with family and friends.

While I've made a lot of original quilts, I haven't published many patterns. With the encouragement of friends, I'm throwing my hat in the ring. My first pattern for a quilted version of a Quiet Book is now available for purchase at woodchesters.etsy.com.

Besides my love of quilts, my other passion in sewing is my cloth mama pads. While my initial reaction to cloth pads was - Yuck! - something about them kept tugging at me. I finally made up a few, fell in love with them and wanted to share them with the world :) Besides selling them at my etsy shop aprilmdesigns.etsy.com, I also want to help make people aware of the health benefits associated with them. You can find all of that info at my website http://www.clothmamapads.com/. I'm saving my scraps to make a cloth mama pad quilt one day. The best of both worlds!

Thanks,
  April

My blog. . .  http://april-makingendsmeet.blogspot.com/

Here are the two blocks I made using April's pattern.  First, I made the design in my Attitude Girls jelly roll.  It turned out, of course, very high contrast because Attitude Girls has, well, attitude.

So I had to make one with low contrast.  I found over half a Swanky jelly roll sitting around with nothing to do.  I decided to let my Swanky jelly roll join in the fun.  We will see how far she makes it.  The center square is a pink with white dot print that is going to be my background fabric for this one.

My apologies for these blocks.  They have not received their final pressing yet.  I know I shouldn't let them be seen this way.  Sorry.  Are the quilt police going to call me in for questioning?

Okay, so a couple other items of business.  I type these up Saturday night so they will post before I can get to the computer Monday morning.  The link will be on the main page shortly.

Second, the drawing.  Yeah!!!!  Here's the deal:
Sew, sew, sew, you have today to finish block 1!

Late tonight (Mountain Daylight Savings Time -- I do not like daylight savings time by the way -- too much information -- oops!) I will post my two new blocks on Flickr.  When these two blocks are posted, every block before my blocks are entered into the random drawing for two fabulous prizes that will be announced tomorrow.

Here's the Flickr link again: (http://www.flickr.com/groups/1343277@N20/)

Question:  What about the speed demons who finish Block 2 before I get my Block 2 posted?
Answer:  Speed Demons, you have a choice to make.  If you post your block, you will have two chances in tomorrows drawing because you will have two blocks posted.  Or you can wait until after I post mine to be entered into the next drawing.  I will leave the decision to each of you.

Block Number One

March 1st has finally arrived. Let the games begin! Here is Block #1 in our Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along.

Click here or on the picture of the block below for the link to the pdf that contains the directions to create block #1.

After you make your block, upload a picture on our new flickr group here, or use the link on the right side of the blog. I can't wait to other blocks besides mine on the rotating flickr badge.

Why do you want to post your picture? Because we all want to see YOUR block! Okay, another reason is because that picture enters you into the next drawing. So there is one rule about posting pictures:

Rule 1) Post only one picture of each block.

That's the only rule. Any blocks posted before the deadline will be entered into the next drawing. Any blocks posted after the deadline will be entered into the next drawing.

Are you ready for the first drawing?! I will post winners tomorrow. Sorry. I couldn't stand winners being hidden at the bottom of a post, and I couldn't stand posting twice in one day.

We have two great prizes for tomorrow (for anyone who has sign up to play along by today):

Prize 1) A Jelly Roll courtesy of Fat Quarter Shop.
Prize 2) A quilt book, Simply Charming Fun, courtesy of me.

Yeah! Start sewing today and stay tuned tomorrow . . . .

Moda Bake Shop

Looks like a lot of you are up before I am. Today one of my patterns got to be on Moda Bake Shop! I am thrilled! I named it Easy as Cake.

I did have another name picked out, but you will just have to dash over to Moda Bake Shop to read that story.

I love this quilt! I loved making this quilt! I love everything about this quilt! It is queen size, but very fast to make. The Verna fabric line is the epitome of spring. It makes me smile when I see it. Hope it makes you smile too!

If you are here at my blog for the first time, then welcome. You may be interested in the Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along that we are starting March 1st.

For those who have signed up, some of you are a little nervous. Don't be! This won't be too hard. I've got a great group of designers lined up for you. AND if you have questions, you can always ask! To answer a couple questions:

Yes, I will be introducing these designers to you -- soon.

Contrast, that is really a personal thing. Do you like quilts with contrast? I really like both. For example, in Easy with Cake the background has good contrast with the rest of the fabrics. That was my intent and I love it. On the other hand, I am just binding a quilt where I kept the contrast low. In that quilt, the blocks blend into each other and sometimes you can't tell at a glance that one block is a nine patch etc. I also love that. I would think in term of contrast that way. Do you want your blocks to run together or do you want to see the separations. Choose your background/sashing fabric accordingly.

You can see that I am going for high contrast because I chose a white background to go along with my Attitude Girls jelly roll. I haven't seen the blocks yet, so we will all find out together how they turn out.

That is the part I absolutely love the most -- seeing the fabric combinations everyone comes up with!

Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along 2010

**For anyone just joining us, welcome!  Come and play!  Grab a jelly roll and play catch up.  Let me clarify a little upfront:
1) There isn't an email list to remind you when the blocks are available.  You can sign up to be notified when my blog is updated.  I have posted instructions HERE
2)  All you need to do now is make your block and post it onto our Flickr group HERE.  If you need help, try THIS post.
3)  You can always check this post for the new blocks, but they are first listed as a post on my blog, then I add that link at the bottom of this post.

I am excited to introduce something that I have had in the works for a little while now:
A Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along!

From March 1 to August 2, every other Monday, instructions for a new 12" block will be posted. All of the blocks will be made from jelly roll strips and yardage.

Each block will be designed by a different person. Every two weeks there will be a guest blogger on my blog introducing herself and her block. At the end, you will have made a fun quilt 58" x 72."

Of course, all along the way there will be prizes for those who complete the blocks. Here is a picture of the quilt:

I will fill it in as we go with the blocks that we make.

Here's the nitty gritty:

Fabric Requirements --
1 jelly roll
2 yards background and sashing fabric
1 1/2 yards outer border fabric
2/3 yard binding fabric
3 3/4 yards backing fabric

Grab a jelly roll and some background fabric and let's get started!

The first drawing will be on March 1 when I post the first block. To enter this drawing, comment on this post that you want to join us and what fabric line you are thinking about making it in.

P.S. Scrappy is absolutely fine too. This quilt would make a great stash buster project.

P.P.S. I am making mine out of Attitude Girls by Mary Engelbreit for Moda.

The second drawing will be on March 15 when the first guest blogger posts the second block. Anyone who has made a block and posted it on a flickr site: (http://www.flickr.com/groups/1343277@N20/) will be entered in the drawing.

There will be another drawing each time block instructions are posted. Anyone who posts a picture of a new block since the last drawing will be entered in the next drawing. The block that you post a picture of doesn't have to be just the previous block. It can be for any of the previous blocks that you haven't posted yet.
